Changes in sleep and eating patterns often observed. Show decreased approach (incentive) motivation so they experience a decrease in motivation to seek rewards (loss of vitality=state of being strong and active and energetic). Feel sad and empty and disconnected from others. Case study: alice m several bouts of depression. Triggered by setbacks like breaking up with her boyfriend, betrayed by friends and not receiving raise at work. She couldn"t do stuff anymore that she liked before like playing cards. Felt like her best friend didn"t think she was worthy of her and they grew apart and talked less. Phobias: irrational fears such as heights, small spaces, spiders, blood. Ocd: extreme preoccupation with certain thoughts (obsessions) and compulsive performance of certain behaviors. Someone who has obsessions with dirt might have compulsions of cleaning all the time.
