Document Summary
Chapter 3: the social self: the self, self-concept and self-knowledge. Looking glass self (cooley, 1902): how we imagine others see us. Self-concept: belief about who you are, your self attributes. Ex: introvert vs extrovert, liberal vs. conservative: self perception, self-concept and self-knowledge. Introspection: is looking inward at our own thoughts and feelings. Looking glass self (cooley, 1902): how we imagine others see us: self-perception theory (daryl bem, 1972) States that people infer their attitudes by watching their own behavior. People can learn about themselves the same way that outside observers learn about them by watching their own behavior. I am happy to see you; therefore, i must like you: self-knowledge, affective forecasting: We are not good at predicting how we are going to feel. Impact bias: we overestimate the strength and duration of emotional reactions (we overestimate how it impacts us) Immune neglect: we underestimate our psychological coping mechanisms for negative events.
