External and internal factors: situational factors. Experiment: when a homosexual stranger requested assistance, many fewer people were helpful than when a heterosexual stranger requested the same assistance. People less likely to help drunk people because problems are seen as their own fault for getting too drunk. Participants played one of three video games, then experimenter spilled cup of pencils. Aggressive video: 28% helped: specific studies. One participant, two confederates in room while smoke starts to come in. Closed subway train between stations where they had a controlled group ex. Number of people on train will not change between stations. Confederate faked medical problem, would watch who helped. Tested alcohol involvement, presence of blood, presence of a nurse in the train car, etc. Female driver broken down at side of road. People more likely to help if they had just seen a similar situation in which someone else was helping: emotions.
