Structural Functionalism
• Breakdown of terms:
o Structure= organize sections, shelter/ protect, constrain movement
▪ Post Modernism Functionalists believe structure is natural.
▪ But Post Modern Socialists believe it is man-made like social classes,
gender, and class.
o Functional element of society = anything that helps make order/ stability in
society.
• Order/ Stability theory of society
o Functional/ Dysfunctional elements of society
• Concerned of solving the Hobbesian problem
o Hobbesian Problem = what prevents war of all against all?
▪ Answer to Hobbesian Problem = Leviathan
▪ Leviathan= giant monster with tentacles
▪ Leviathan= analogy for the government= which makes laws.
▪ Functionalists view the individualist as dangerous and need to be
controlled.
