Sociology: systematic & objective study of human society. Disciplines: anthropology, economics, history, psychology, political science, philosophy, demography, geography. 2 common characteristics of social sciences: interest for social behaviors and look or explanations by referencing existence of a group, human beings studying behavior of other humans. Social sciences vs natural sciences: less objective than natural sciences. More value judgments (max weber = value judgements) Opinions based on moral/ethical judgments or religious/political choices. Sociology as tool to get objective understanding of society. 3 = sociologists can apply the sociological imagination: ability to connect most basic, intimate aspects of your life to the social context, 3 levels social context. Social locations: physical location, personal characteristics (age, gender, ethnicity ) 4 = sociologists can identify possible social policies. 5 = sociologists can evaluate likely consequences of social policies. 1 = providing language of liberation: knowing that other people in society shared your experiences is liberating.
