Due to trade, expanded into mesopotamian area. Large accumulation of wealth in n. africa and mesopotamia so war came to be because people wanted their things. During peacetime, everyone was preoccupied with trade. Huge trade routes from ashkar to kanesh---1000 km. Standard trade route, took 6 weeks to travel. Opened trade all over the mesopotamia region. Traded in tin, copper (for bronze), textiles, gold, silver. Assur to kanesh 1000 km (~620 mi) Some caravans 300 donkeys, consuming 6 tons of water per day. Damascus (3800 ybp) known as city of asses (donkeys common everywhere, for every use) Distinguished between noble horse and servile donkey. Wild use of donkey in greco-roman times. Plowing, crushing olives, grinding grain, carting manure, transporting oil and wine, maintained military supply lines. Those destined for pack animals were castrated to ensure they were tractable. Christianity elevated the donkey since christ rode into jerusalem on a donkey.
