Document Summary

Derived from the greek demos = people; a visitor of people. The study of the relationship of the various factors & conditions that determine the frequency & distribution of a disease in a population. There are two ways that frequency of disease can be measured: prevalence, the number of cases fitting diagnostic criteria detected in a defined population during a given census interval. Consists of new & old cases occurring during the census: incidence, a count of just the new cases. This is often important when assessing new control strategies. Endemic phase (incidence constant): a disease agent that persists continuously in a geographic area, usually at low levels. Epidemic phase (incidence increasing): a sharp increase in clinical cases in time & space, epizootic. Pandemic: epidemic of global proportions (e. g. plague) How long is a person infected: the longer you are infected the more you can transfer the disease.
