Fundamental issue 1: animal vs human suffering. Capacity for suffering: human and animal sentience. Many contemporary issues can be reduced to conflict or priority between well- being of people vs. animals. Physical health (clean water, air, nutritious food, disease free, successful biological function) Often the lack of suffering if considered the most basic level of well-being. Origin from latin - to previous, feel using the senses. Responsive to or conscious of sense impressions. Aware - feeling, experiencing, or noticing something. Ranking of human suffering vs animal suffering. Animals may suffer, but is human suffering more important. Response to pain or pleasure (operant conditioning) Shared neuroanatomical substrates (limbic system for emission) Cerebral cortex side and frontal lobe circuitry (higher cortical functions) Similar physiological activation (fmri and dog love ) Lost their appetite, their gills beat faster, and they rubber the affected area against the side of the tank. Fish front when they receive an electric shock.
