ATMO 336 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Greenhouse Gas, Lightning, Chlorofluorocarbon
Document Summary
Impacts of extreme events in the united states. The 10-year average total number of weather related fatalities per year is 543. The federal, state, and local governments spend a good deal of money in the areas of severe weather prediction, preparation and relief. Has been mostly effective in limiting number of deaths due to weather. There are rather large changes in loss of life for each category of severe weather from year to year. Number of deaths due to lightning, tornadoes, and hurricanes have been generally lower in recent decades. This is most likely caused by better forecasts and overall preparedness for severe weather events. Deaths due to floods have stayed relatively the same. Deaths caused by exposure to heat and cold, wind, and rip currents were tracked more recently. Most deaths are associated with deadly sporadic events, i. e. hurricane katrina. Severe weather is the cause of extreme economic loss as well.
