Document Summary

The basic assumption of chemistry is that there is at least one differentiating characteristic for each substance. The boiling of a liquid occurs when its vapor pressure equals the atmospheric pressure. Central problems: combinations of multiple substances (mixture vs. pure substance, properties change (heterogeneous vs. homogeneous, properties change as a function of time (dynamic vs. static) Intensive property-values that do not depend on the amount of substance you have and are unique for each substance (boiling point, density, solubility) Extensive property-properties that depend on the amount of substance you have (mass, volume) Volatile- in chemistry and physics, volatility is the tendency of a substance to vaporize. Volatility is directly related to a substance"s vapor pressure. At a given temperature, a substance with higher vapor pressure vaporizes more readily than a substance with a lower vapor pressure. Physical change- a transformation in which the chemical nature of the substance involved does not change.
