Roman gaul (southern area - influenced by mediterranean culture) By 121 bc the romans has control of the southern coast of gaul. Caesar"s gallic wars (58-51 bc) conquered the interior. Lots of trade with rome b caesar"s day; alo increasing urbanization. Gold coin of the parisii, pre roman (3rd-1st centuries) Roman conquest of gaul : some consequences. Julii: family of native gauls tied to the julio-claudians. The provinces of gaul the rhine frontier - a permanent military zone. Rebels (unsuccessful) against nero in ad 68 after years of neglect of julii by nero. The julii were considered dangerous nationalists after the revolts and were eliminated. East: romans took over existing governments: had to build them up in the west. This helps explain why so much of the western empire had a latin-based culture. West: army integral to daily life, east, army was an alien presence. Roman republican architecture: very similar to greek architecture. The greek architectural orders: doric, ionic, corinthian.
