East: romans took over existing governments: had to build them up in the west. This helps explain why so much of the western empire had a latin-based culture. West: army integral to daily life, east, army was an alien presence. Roman republican architecture: very similar to greek architecture. The greek architectural orders: doric, ionic, corinthian.
