Document Summary

Along with eukaryotes and archaea, they represent one of the three major branches of the tree of life. A bacterial cell is about 1/10 the size of a plant or animal cell. Consists mostly of genetic material (dna),proteins, surrounded by a cell membrane. Bacteria are so important that it is hard to know where to start talking about them. Probably more species of bacteria than any other type of living thing, but only a few are officially described. Estimated mass of all bacteria on earth is greater than that of all plants and animals combined. Different bacteria get energy from different sources: Some get energy from other organisms, especially parasitic bacteria. Some get energy from the sun (like plants that photosynthesize) Some get energy from nonliving elements in the environment (i. e. nitrogen, sulfur, etc. ) Inside animals and plants (symbionts not diseases) In earth"s crust (at least 1. 2 miles deep) In the ocean up to 7 miles deep.
