Document Summary
Defining life span development: systematic changes and continuities from conception to deal. Allows us to make suggestions towards theories of development: know the different types of sample selection o, know the difference between sample and population. Population: group from which sample is pulled: know all the different types of data collection methods. Verbal reports: interviews, questions, surveys, ability and achievement tests, personality skills. Naturalistic observation: observing people in everyday surroundings. Structured observation: create special stimuli tests/situations designed to elicit behavior of interest: allows researcher to control situation. Physiological research: use to assess variables of interest; biological response to stimulus; often use animals as subjects; hard to fake/lie about body responses. Case studies: allows us to look in-depth at particular person/phenomenon; small samples; hard to generalize general population. Cohort: group of individuals born at same time. Cohort effect: effects of being born in particular cohort/time period.
