Geog 170: earth"s environment: introduction to physical geography - lecture 8: phase. (as far as we know) earth is the only place where water can exist in all 3 states: Water needs to gain or lose heat energy for it to change state. The structure of water molecules is quite different in each of its states. I. e. ice is a regular crystal lattice. Condensation or evaporation describes the liquid-to-gas phase change; Sublimation refers to the gas-to-solid phase change (atmospheric ice). So cold when it goes directly from gas to solid without going into the liquid phase. Latent heat energy in ice is absorbed by liquid water. Latent energy in liquid water is absorbed by water vapor. During evaporation in the atmosphere, latent heat energy in liquid water is absorbed by water vapor. During condensation in the atmosphere, latent heat energy is released into the air when water vapor changes into liquid water.
