Potassium performs many of the same functions as sodium, such as nerve impulse transmission and uid balance. The uid contained outside the cell is called extracellular. The uid that surrounds and protects the fetus during development is called amniotic uid. Intracellular uid is 2/3 of the uid in the human body. Evaporation of 1 quart of perspiration releases about 600 kilocalories of heat energy from the body. A buffer helps to regulate acid-base balance by binding or releasing hydrogen ions. Metabolic water is a by-product of chemical reactions in the body and it contributes to uid balance. As perspiration evaporates, heat energy is released from the body. Chloride in the human body functions: stomach acid production, immune response, and nerve impulse conduction. When kiddos have a fever, vomiting, diarrhea, and increased perspiration, they are at an increased risk fro dehydration.
