Act largely independently one from the other to encode info. They gather and integrate impulses from several cells in the retina. Off: (+) at the center with an inhibitory surround (-) at the center with an excitatory surround. Neurons are fired right before the initiation of off and at the termination of off. The region of the retinal within which a local change of brightness would cause the ganglion cell to discharge. The interactive annulus (center and ring) that causes a ganglion cell to discharge. Note: the definition of receptive field went from the retina to the outside world. If we know what ganglion cells are telling the brain, we will have gone far toward understanding the retina.
