Simulating other people s mental states is something we do all the time, this capacity enables us to feel empathetic concern for another distress. When i morally evaluate my own conduct, you have your own feelings toward what you"re doing, and then you can imagine what others peoples feelings would be toward what you"re doing. Impartial spectators feelings may be different from your own, feelings toward yourself can be distorted by excessive rationalization, bias, self-love. When morally evaluating myself my aim is to sympathize with and adopt the feelings if the impartial spectator. A virtuous person adopts her own feelings of the impartial spectator. Self command, makes power to control feelings possible. Impartial spectator embedded in norms of society. Moral approval or disapproval for your actions - impartial spectator. Moral psychology - impartial spectator knows what is right/wrong. What is respectable v. what is respected - deep human aspiration for both.
