Document Summary
Through the lenses of gender and race. Andersson and pearson define workplace in civility as "low intensity deviant behavior with ambiguous intent to harm the target, in violation of workplace norms for mutual respect. Uncivil behaviors are characteristically rude and dis courteous, displaying a lack of regard for others" Workplace incivility, by definition, is completely distinct from physical aggression and violence. One of the most pervasive forms of antisocial behavior in the workplace. Empirical research suggests that employees targeted with uncivil behavior experience greater job stress and dissatisfaction, lower creativity, cognitive distraction, and psychological distress. Personnel targeted with pervasive incivility ultimately lose commitment to their organizations and exit at higher rates. Many uncivil work behaviors fall into the category of daily hassles, that is, routine nuisances of ev eryday life. In spite of progress, gender and racial disparities endure in american organizations, particularly at the highest levels, where power is most concentrated.
