PSIO 202 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Flow Velocity, Vascular Resistance, Blood Pressures
Document Summary
Lecture 6 exam 1 hemodynamics: pressure, flow, and resistance: describe the relation between cross sectional area of the vascular system and blood flow velocity, the higher the cross sectional area the lower the velocity. It is high because blood from the left ventricle has to be pushed throughout the whole body. The blood being pushed through the body depends on a pressure gradient the pressure of the blood inside the ventricle has to be greater than the pressure outside of the ventricle: diastolic 80 mmhg. It is lower because this is the pressure of the heart during ventricular relaxation/atrial contraction. This is the pressure that is required to move the blood from the atria to the ventricles, which is largely based on concentration gradient. So, the higher the diameter the lower the pressure.
