Block 3 - lecture 2 - plasma membrane basics. Introduction to today"s lecture involved a case study: There"s an aggressive degeneration of the transparency of the lens. First signs: water starts to appear, this can be due to increase of sorbitol that"s converted from glucose. Sorbitol is unable to exit and gradually accumulates in the lens. Length of the phospholipid area of the membrane: Homeostasis is all about maintaining a balance of several factors that make a cell healthy. To understand the roles of plasma membrane in homeostasis, we must understand what the membrane"s roles are: Serves as a barrier - maintains the appropriate internal environment by separating the outside and inside of the cell. Regulation - regulates what enters and exits the cell. Protection - protects the integrity of the interior of the cell by allowing only selected substances to enter the cell. Structure - provides the structure of the cell and organelles.
