PSY 352 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Autonomic Nervous System, Psychoticism, Gordon Allport
Document Summary
Thought that psychoanalysis = too deep, behaviorism = not deep enough. Act frequency approach (act nomination prototype judgement recording) Prototypicality: some examples are more typical than others (ex: pigeon is a more common response to bird than emu would be) Lexical approach: all important individual differences have been encoded in language over time, lots of words for something important and not a lot for something less important. Statistical approach: start with a pool of traits, rate self. Factor analysis: procedure that identifies clusters of items that are correlated w/ each other, but not other clusters. Low: reserved, prefer alone time or small group. Ex: morning people tend to have higher c scores, evening people have higher e scores (which makes sense because usually parties/social events are at night) Relationships: differences in a, n, o make for more marital dissatisfaction. Higher c scores are usually best employees, get highest evaluations, less likely to be laid off.
