Dissociative disorders- loss of (usually personal) memory due to psychological causes. Depersonalization-derealization disorder- experiences of feeling detaches from themselves or that world around them feels unreal: world doesn"t feel real, disconnected from people in your life. Dissociative identity disorder- (multiple personality disorder): two or more distinct identities or personality states. Schizophrenia- two sets of symptoms: positive & negative: positive- symptoms found in schizophrenics. Inappropriate affect & speech disturbances: negative- normal behaviors that are absent in schizophrenics. Social withdrawal, limited speech (mutism) and action (waxy flexibility), poor hygiene, apathy, flat affect (no emotional response at all: 20-30 years old is the period of greatest susceptibility of schizophrenia, has one of the strongest genetic links. Causes: brain abnormalities: some schizophrenics have: Larger than normal ventricles: excessive dopamine activity, stress. Rule of thirds: 1/3 completely recover, 1/3 recover if drugs continue, 1. 3 never recover.
