The further back in history one goes the lower the level of child care, and the more likely children are to be killed, abandoned, beaten, terrorized, and sexually abused (demause 1974, page 1). Commonly agreed upon traits: physically immature, psychologically immature, dependent on parents, require socialization/rearing, children are not responsible for their lives/actions. Less agreed upon traits: require separation from adults, need foods, clothing, and toys, absolutely require loving, supportive, educational environment. Influenced by the era, social class, culture, location, and family. Empey et al.
