Evidence about nature, nurture and gender: chromosome studies, hormone studies, brain research. When gender is ambiguous: sometimes prenatal hormones different from chromosomal sex, sometimes sex chromosomes are anomalous (xo, xxx, xxy, xyy, result: some individuals are intersexual . Intersexuals: evidence for some hormonal (biological) effects on gendered behavior, environment also has overriding or mediating effect in many cases, but not everyone adopts the gender of rearing. There can be serious identity problems when biological and social don"t match. Saturday, january 14, 2017: herms, merms, ferms. Medical and legal erasure of intersexuals: recognized throughout history but, people must register as male or female in legal system, medical community has erased intersexuals through surgery and hormone therapy. Growing recognition of intersexuality: immediate corrective surgery on infants with ambiguous genitalia is a bad idea, doctors should minimize irreversible assignments. Therapy, not surgery: gender variation is normal.
