People of color responded immediately to the end of the legal slave trade and the abolition of slavery with festivals and celebrations - just not in southern new england. Because they knew even with the slavery being ended those in their late 20"s and over would be denied any sort of freedom. People of color, enslaved and free, as somehow public available or on the market 86. Slave status were rede ned as uniquely innate and permanent biological traits in persons of color 86. Slavery had provided a xed role, status, place, and identity in the social structure for persons of color - within the white household 88. Only children born after the july 4th were to be free slaves and everyone born before that time would be slaves for the rest of their lives.
