By 1910 1/3 of the entire population was either 1st or 2nd generation americans. 2 major waves of immigration from europe to america. Primarily from england, ireland, scotland, and germany. A lot either speak english or are familiar with it. Typically came with a little more money. Able to adjust well to political system. Tend not to speak english or protestant, mainly catholic or jewish. Experience a lot of racism and do not fit in as well as old stock. Poorer immigrants tended to settle in cities. Slavic peoples tended to work in steel. Irish tended to work in coal mines. Chinese immigrants were banned for 10 years. (asian women were prohibited from entering the united states when they were allowed to come) They did not want any asian children born on american soil.
