Document Summary
Hist 2013 lesson 3: urbanization (the gilded age) week. Before the gilded age most lived in rural areas. By the end, half of the population lived in cities. 90% located in urban areas by 1900. Some cities became specialized or known for a certain industry. Because of the railway things can be shipped out or in more easily. Subways created and allow people to spread outward. Able to produce more and more food. City dwellers aren"t able to do this so there must be a surplus for those that aren"t producing it themselves now. As agriculture became mechanized people moved away and needed work. Need jobs and they"re in the city, so that"s where they go. Before this they did not know how to construct building taller than 4 stories. New steel construction techniques allow for construction of apartments and taller buildings. They are shiny on outside, but inside is more corrupt.
