The south had a lot resources extracted but are shipped to the north to be refined and processed. A lot of industries boomed but within a few years have gotten all the resources so it busts. Change in the nature of agriculture, not what is being produced though. Many southerners very poor after civil war. Blame southern states government for not fighting for tariffs and giving railroads tax breaks. Many poor southerners couldn"t afford poll tax and most slaves couldn"t read and the education in the south was also known for being worse than in the north.
