SCWK 3193 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Elder Abuse, Baby Talk, Ageism
Document Summary
Human diversity and social work week 14 class notes. The age at which most americans think that the average person becomes old according to others in society is around sixties to seventies. Some people have the view that old people are worthless. People are working longer, and the number of americans older than 85 is increasing faster than any other group in america. You should never tell an old person, remember you already told me that. Problems faced by the elderly: low status, loss of family and friends, elder abuse, depression, malnutrition, transportation, substandard housing, financial, health/cost of healthcare, etc. : medical personnel admit that they would rather not treat the elderly, young people avoid elderly people because of prejudices, and elderly have trouble with hiring and retention with employers. Old people might get frustrated because they cannot do things that they could before, so they might be mean.
