SOCI 2013 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: One-Drop Rule, Critical Race Theory, John Dollard
Document Summary
Ethnic pluralism: the coexistence of a variety of distinct racial and ethnic groups within one society. Why sociologists study race: we all live in racially structured lives and there are two major myths that there is (1) any pure race and (2) that there is any superior race. Segregation: spatial and social separation of categories of people by race, ethnicity, class, gender, and/or religion. Discrimination (add examples): actions or practices of dominant group members that have a harmful impact on members of a subordinate group. One drop rule: american social and legal custom of classifying anyone with one black ancestor, regardless of har far back, as black. Gendered racism: includes the notion of intersectionality-that race combines with gender to cause further exploitation of women of color. Scapegoating: a person or group that is incapable of o ering resistance to the hostility or aggression of others.
