ATH 1061 Lecture Notes - Lecture 20: Vastus Medialis, Rectus Femoris Muscle, Biceps Femoris Muscle
CH. 20 THE KNEE NOTES
Bursa
• Infrapatellar- lies underneath patellar tendon
• Supraptellar-lies underneath quadriceps tendon
• Prepatellar- lies over top of patella
• Superficial- lies above tendon and below skin
Knee Anatomy
• Dynamic Stabilizers
o Quadrics muscles: vastus medialis oblique, vastus lateralis/intermidis,
rectus femoris
▪ Extends the knee
▪ Flexes the hip
▪ Lies anterior of the femur
o Crosses hip and knee joint
o Hamstring Muscles- biceps femoris, rectis femoris, semitendinosus
▪ Flexes the knee
▪ Extends the hip
▪ Lies posterior to the femur
▪ Crosses the hip and knee joint
Knee Extensors Mechanism
• Pulley Mechanism
• Q Angles-normal is 20 degrees
• How to stabilize- VMO needs to be strengthened
Knee Injuries
• Acute
o Knee Sprains
▪ ACL, PCL, MCL, LCL, unhappy triad
▪ ACL function- anterior displacement of tibia on the femur
o Unhappy Triad
▪ Rupture of the ACL, MCL, medial meniscus—Valgus force
• ACL- there will be a pop, knee gave way, rotational,
noncontact, tension—hyperextension, tight and then
pops, surgery because its more important, swell
immediately
• MCL- valgus force, rotational force
• LCL- rarely see isolated, varus fore
• PCL- hyper flexion of the knee, landing on a flexed knee,
rarely needs surgery, offensive lineman, car accidents,
▪ MOI: valgus force or lateral blow to the knee
