CH.1: FOUNDATIONS OF PUBLIC SPEAKING
• Ethical communicators are honest
o Do not engage in plagiarism
• Ethical communicator act with integrity
• EC behave fairly

Understanding the Rhetorical Situation
• Components:
o Speaker- originator of the speech
o Audience- group to whom the speech is directed
o Occasion- setting in which the speech is given
Effective Speech Components
• Content
o Information/ideas you present
o Includes: speech purpose, main points, evidence, supporting materials
o Listener relevant links- making your audience care
• Structure
o Blueprint of your speech
o Helps listeners follow your ideas
o Macrostructure- intro, body, conclusion, transitions
o Microstructure- language and style choices (metaphors, alliteration,
repetition, etc.)
• Delivery
o Voice
o Body
o Conversational
o Purposeful movement
Public Speaking as Communication
• Participants- assume role as sender or receiver
• Communication- creating shared meaning
• Senders- form and transmit messages using verbals/nonverbal
• Receiver- interpret messages seen y others
• Messages- verbal utterances
• Encoding- putting our thoughts/feelings into words
• Decoding-interpreting verbals/nonverbals sent by others
• Feedback- reactions and responses that indicate how a message was
interpreted
