Sex and Gender
• Sex- the division of human bodies based on biological differences in
reproductive organs
• How do they differ?
o Chromosomes
o Gonads
o Genitalia
o Secondary Sex Characteristics
• Gender- a social position; the set of social arrangements that are built around
normative sex categories
• The meanings attached to sex differences within a cause
• Gender Identify- a person conception of themselves as male or female
Social Construction of Sex
• Bodies are not just either male or female (binary)
• More of an ideal than an absolute
• Intersex
o Frequency
o Corrective surgery
• Third Genders
o Trans/transgender
o Queer/Non-binary
o Nadle
o Two-spirited
• Gender is a social institution: it establishes patterns of expectations for
people, orders our daily lives, and is one of the fundamental building blocks
of society
• All societies have gender roles
Deceptive Distinctions
• Many of the differences we observe are not directly related to our biology
• They arise out of the result of different positions men and women occupy
Girls Throw Like Girls
• Throwing gap- one of the biggest differences between sexes
• By age 4, it is 3x higher than any other motor function

Removal from dsm: 1973- homosexuality removed from the dsm, 58% approved, 38% opposed, this america life.
