Few studies of ancient cities have addressed these issues. Extension of low-density settlement outwards from cities to countryside. Thought to be modern problem brought on by expansion of automobile use. Negative tone of sprawl" results largely from major costs associated with it: Loss of agriculture land and open spaces. Low-density, scattered, urban development without systematic regional public land-use planning: existed around many ancient cities (especially evident around walled cities and towns) Modern urban sprawl studies utilize transects from city centers outward to monitor density and land-use patterns. Archaeologists perform settlement studies in similar fashion. Development that meets needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs: current practices and potential future outcomes.
