Reciprocity helps hold family, friends and the economy together: negative reciprocity - refers to the tendency for one person"s negative behavior to instigate another"s negative behavior. Why is reciprocity so prevalent in foraging societies: food sharing among close kin, adaptive, tolerated theft , not sharing would be wasteful, social pressures to share. Reciprocity in complex foraging societies: redistribution - ow of goods into the center and back out again (tribal chiefdoms, feudal systems, potlatch in paci c northwest cultures in ceremonial mass gift-giving. Malinowski"s findings: trobriand island society is just as complex and hierarchical as european society, highly diverse, rituals satisfy universal humans needs . The gift economy reinforce and upholds social relation: leveling mechanism, gift giving/ sharing, political function / reinforcing alliances, adaptive strategy. Value is subjective more important is the social function the exchange symbolizes (malinowski)
