Document Summary

This chapter will help you understand the factors that influence the structure of a biological community. You will be introduced to the concept of biodiversity and its importance for the stability of a community. You will recognize adaptations of species that influence community structure. You will be introduced to the structure of a food chain and understand why they are necessarily short chains. This is also a good example of how the different levels of study in ecology overlap. Concept 2 the structure of a community is influenced by competition. To understand competition within a community, one must understand what an ecological niche is: what does competition within a community mean, if one population wins out over others, so those populations are excluded, this is called competitive exclusion. What is the difference between a fundamental niche and a realized niche.
