Document Summary

Solvent - greatest proportion in solution; usually a liquid. Solute - lesser proportion in solution; usually a solid. Suspension - solid remains visible when added to water; settles when agitation stops. Colloid - substance appears to dissolve in water, but doesn"t form a solution. Tyndall effect - colloids scatter light; true solutions don"t have this characteristic. Concentration - amount of solute per amount of solution. Molarity is the most effective form of calculation for solutions. Molecular weight - weight of a single molecule of a compound. Diffusion - tendency of particles to distribute evenly in an aqueous solution or gaseous mix. Semi-permeable membranes allow small particles through, rarely large ones. Osmosis - net movement of water through a semi-permeable membrane. Occurs when concentration of solutes on separate sides of a membrane are different. Water moves from low to high concentrations of solute. Water moves from high to low concentrations of water.
