Externa: outer: swimmer"s ear, inflammation of the ear canal. Ear fluid drains through eustachian tubes into nasal and sinus passages. Kids are more at risk: because of flat eustachian tube, fluid tends to not drain out of the ear, increases chance for infection/inflammation, adults eustachian tube tilts downward for draining. Presence of fluid in the middle ear with acute signs of illness & sx of middle ear inflammation. Most episodes occur in the first 2 years of life. Daycare attendance, second hand smoke exposure, & family hx increases risk. Lower incidence with breastfeeding: not sure about pathophysiology from it, most likely to do with immunoglobulins in breastmilk. Allergies: kids prone to more mucous congestion. Bottled drinking while supine: bottle propping, causes milk to back flow into the ear canal. Most common organisms: s. pneumoniae, h. influenzae. Can get vaccine for: m. catarrhalis. Monday, february 24, 2020: often preceded by viral infections.
