Document Summary
Inflammation of the epiglottis, larynx, & trachea. A general term applied to a group of sx: hoarseness, resonant cough, inspiratory stridor, respiratory distress. Caused by swelling or obstruction of larynx or subglottic airway. Medical emergency: keep emergency intubation equipment at the bedside. Usually caused by h. influenza type b (hib), streptococcus pneumonae. Monday, february 24, 2020: because of vaccines, don"t see epiglottis much anymore. Other causes: ingestion of caustic agents, smoke inhalation, foreign bodies. First thing you wanna do: make sure an airway is in place. Chin thrust out, mouth open, tongue protruding. Keep child calm: if they scream, the epiglottis will close off their airway. Airway management: bag-valve mask ventilation, intubation. 3: oxygen won"t really get to their lungs because of the obstruction. Monday, february 24, 2020: so not always the best option. Antibiotics: get these in asap to stop the inflammation. Prevention: h. influenza b (hib) vaccine.
