12-36 mos: utilize play with this age group when doing anything, always allow parent to stay with child, understand that medical things, especially in hospital are scary. Physical growth slows compared to infancy: avg weight gain is 4-6 lbs/yr, average length increase is 3 in/yr. Adult height is ~2x height at 2 yrs: head growth slows. Legs appear slightly bowed: dissipates overtime as child bears weight & musculature strengthens. Senses become increasingly well developed & coordinated: things like taste & smell all of a sudden are working together. Ex: toddlers less likely to try new foods d/t appearance or smell & reject a food d/t texture. 1: by the end of 1st yr, all of brain cells are present but continue to grow in size. Monday, march 2, 2020: brain growth is 75% completed by 2 yrs, myelination of the spinal cord is almost complete by 2 yrs. Gi: digestive processes fairly complete by the beginning of toddlerhood.
