In 2017, the cdc reported that close to 40,000 people died from gun- related injuries in the us. Suicides account for the majority of gun deaths. 75% of all us murders (homicides) involved gun. 51% of all us suicides involved guns. Access to a gun increases the risk of death by suicide by 3x. Most gun-related homicides occur in urban areas. Gun violence affects people of all ages & races but disproportionately impacts young adults, males & racial ethnic minorities. Among us residents ages 15-24: 4th leading cause of death in non-hispanic whites, 2nd leading cause of death for hispanic, leading cause of death for non-hispanic blacks. States with the highest rates: alaska, alabama, montana, louisiana, missouri, mississippi, arkansas. States with the lowest rates: new jersey, connecticut, rhode island, new york, massachusetts. # of gun deaths per 100,000 in 2019: usa: 12. 21, canada: 2. 05, australia: 1. 04, france: 2. 83, germany: 0. 99.
