In 2018, close to half a million americans experienced homelessness on a single night. Overall, 67% were individuals & 33% were families with children. Between 2017-2018 an increase of 0. 3% (1,834 individuals) in homelessness: 7% are youth under the age of 25 living on their own, 7% are veterans, 18% are chronically homeless individuals, 50% are 50+ Gender: 70% of homeless individuals are men. Race & ethnicity: white americans are the largest racial grouping, african americans, american indians, & alaska native are overrepresented compared to the general population. States with the highest number of homeless individuals (2018) Estimated that homeless service providers can offer temporary beds to abbot 70% of individuals experiencing homelessness on a given night. These beds can include: emergency shelter, transitional housing, safe haven. Roughly shortage of about 7 million rental homes. Models that have demonstrated to be effective in ending homelessness: permanent supportive housing. Provides housing paired with long-term rental assistance & provide supportive services.
