PSY 241 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Confounding, Quasi, Dependent And Independent Variables
Document Summary
Random assignment: each p has an equal chance of being assigned to each of the treatment conditions, without random assignment you have a correlation or quasi experiment. Independent variable: variable manipulated by researcher, usually consists of the two treatment conditions to which participants are exposed. Experimental or treatment group: group that receives treatment or manipulation. Control group: group that does not receive treatment, provides baseline for comparison with the experimental group. A variable that varies systematically along with iv manipulation that can influence results. When confounds exist, we can"t be sure if results due to manipulation of iv or the confounding variable. Lacks one of the requirements for a true experiment: not all ivs are manipulated, lack of full random assignment. Variable that defines the groups often is a naturally occurring, non-manipulated variable. Constructs- hypothetical concepts that are used to help describe behavior: intelligence, marital satisfaction. Operational definitions: how we measure constructs.
