Goals- an attainable end state that requires effot. Incentive- higher order goals that subsumes lower order goals. Incentive- a complex goal state that subsumes lower order goals. Action- specific behaviors that lead to the attainment of a goal. Expectancy value theory- the tendency to approach or avoid a goal is a product of expectancy and value (toleman) Expectancy- your subjective appraisal of the likelihood of achieving a goal. Broken down into 2 types: outcome expectancy- behavior x will lead to goal y, efficacy expectancy- based on judgement of ability to adequately perform the behavior needed to achieve a goal. Value- the anticipated satisfaction of achieving a goal. Intrinsic value- derived from pleasure of just performing the behavior. Diff. value- pleasure from succeeding at a skill demanding task. Instrumental value- value of accomplishing a task that moves you toward a future goal. Force- tendency to approach or avoid a goal.
