Basic functions of costumes: de ne the character. Set them apart from other characters and actors: set the character in time and space, establish age, establish rank and social status, personality, indicate changes and o -stage events. Ex: character returns in tatters after being imprisoned: supporting theme, concept, mood. Style, color, scale, and texture are all used to do this: meet performer needs. Ex: performer allergic to a certain fabric. The shape or structure of the clothing: color, accessories, makeup/masks, hair style/wigs, proportion. Always drawn on a body: will add features of actor when possible, fabric swatches, research images/collages, purchased at patterns. Creating the costumes: items are classi ed as pull, buy, rent, or build. Similar to props work list: built garments are at patterned or draped on a dress form. Created to exact measurements of the actor. Seam allowances are larger than a normal store-bought garment. Special e ects: beading, dyeing, stitching, sequins.
