CPSY 417 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Doctor Of Psychology
Class 6: May 8
Scientist-
Practitioner
● Important both of training and philosophical approach to practicing
psychology
○ Reciprocity between research and clinical work
Order of research intensive (more to less)
● PhD in counseling or clinical psychology
○ Depends on the university and program
● PsyD
○ Doctoral degree, but not as much in research
○ Very expensive compared to PhD
● MA, MSW and MS
○ Master’s of Arts, Master’s of Social Work, Master’s of Science
● Undergrad
○ Pretty easy to ignore research parts
Why Science
● Objectivity, tests the theories and generates new ones
○ Vs. magical solutions
● Controlled observations, precise definitions, repeatability
Scholarly Work
● A specific concept that is slightly different from science
○ Guided by theory, revised and refined
Quantitative Research
● Observations are transformed into numbers and are analyzed
statistically, concerned with facts
○ Data are collected by measuring things
● Statistical analyses are described and reported
○ Concerned with objective experiences
Qualitative Research
● Observations made in words, concerned with understanding subjective
experiences
○ Participant observations and interviews (open-ended questions)
● Data analyzed by themes and reported in language
○ Rather than numbers
Process vs. Outcome Research
● Process: what happens during the intervention
○ Looks for underlying mechanisms for change
● Outcome: more concerned with distal/ultimate outcomes
○ Similar to theories
Internal vs. External Validity
● External Validity: generalizability of the findings of one study to other
settings
○ Applicability to the real world
● Internal Validity: study successfully eliminates confounding variables
