ENVS 203 Lecture 1: Project Nim Lecture Notes
Document Summary
The director, james marsh, allows the viewer to be snagged on some of the story"s ethical thorns. he also engages in a bit of manipulation, using sleight-of-hand re-enactments to sensationalize a drama that hardly requires it -ny times. Makes it sensationalistic so the film isn"t boring. Kind of manipulative - the movie is about nim, who was moved around and abused, but also super violent at times. Gives audience an opportunity to battle with it. Showing violent moments reminds audience that nim is still a chimp, even though he is being treated like a human. The whole premise that he should be breast fed and treated like a human - he is highly intelligent, but it"s a misinterpretation to assume that he would fit into a human family. Nim is a little like an orphan experiencing bizarre and hostile foster homes - he"s just a lot stronger than human beings.
