The south was ighing to take slavery out of the union, and the north ighing to keep it in the union. However, the civil war becomes a war about slavery. There are 3 reasons for this: slaves made it a war about slavery. Slaves were key players in transforming the meaning of the war. The answer is: slaves freed themselves: soldiers experiencing unprecedented trauma on the batleield make the civil war a war about slavery. With only a few excepions, the civil war took place on confederate soil.
