Forms of communicaion: one to one: dyadic communicaion, one to few: small group communicaion, one to many: mass communicaion. Was there a ime without media: pope, king, town cry would send important messages to crowds. And it is only in the last few decades that we have had such media. There was a need for it in western. Europe: there was no media technology before the 18th (or 17th) century. There were manuscripts in which people wrote to be read by a great amount of. Using technology people: not a great answer but technology is usually used where there is a social need for it. China invented prining, had great ships, but did not develop prining technology, disconinued all shipping voyages, while germany and portugal did the opposite. A sign that many, many things (both material and mental) have assumed the commodity-form i. e. they are objects which can be bought and sold.
