Document Summary
Things to consider when choosing an assessment: test objective. Dimensional measurement (e. g symptom severity, processing speed: reliability, validity, cultural sensitivity, privacy and confidentiality, client or participant burden (e. g. time, expense) Key concepts in understanding assessment: validity, the accuracy of a test in assessing what it is supposed to measure, reliability, indicates it is consistent in measurement. Types of reliability: test-retest reliability (test produces similar results when given at two points in time, alternative form reliability (two versions of the test produce similar results) Internal reliability (different parts of the same test produce similar results) Interrater/interjudge reliability (two or more raters/judges come to the same conclusions) Categorical: presence/absence of a disorder (dsm is categorical) (e. g. anxious or not anxious) Dimensional: rank on a continuous quantitative dimension (e. g. how anxious on a scale 1-10) Dimensional systems may better capture an individual"s functioning but the categorical approach has some advantages for research and treatment planning.
